Station Approach, South Croydon
Platform pleasing
This new stepped building is providing a local supermarket at ground level and residential accommodation above. It is conveniently situated next to Sanderstead Station in South Croydon which brings a complication to the site, since it is near the main railway line.
Being right alongside the railway line RISE worked closely with Network Rail, to ensure there is no risk to their assets. In order to get swift approval RISE produced a full calculation package with additional sections, details and competency CV’s.
To maximise the clear space at ground floor level, steel transfer beams have been designed, supported by only three columns inside the 3,500 square foot retail area.
In order to refine the structure RISE built a 3D finite element model to identify the critical load cases and analyse the steel frame efficiently.
Since the development fills the entire site, local disposal of rainwater is not possible.
RISE has worked with Thames Water to agree sufficient storm-water attenuation, and obtained initial approval of the drainage design before starting on site.
Not only did RISE design an efficient solution by working closely with Network Rail and Thames Water, all applications have been approved, allowing a swift start on site.
